It All Began…
I created this blog over nine years ago. It started as a tool to keep in touch with family and friends that we didn’t get to see very often. At that time, I had a happy infant, a spunky two-year-old, and a curious four-year-old. Now the days of diaper bags are long gone and we are quickly approaching drivers licenses and dating! (Oh my!) I began my blog from the living room of a 600 square foot house that we rented between the “good” and the “sketchy” sections of our city. Nine years later, I’m writing from my office in our old 2,500 square foot farmhouse which sits on a mini-homestead. (I’ll call it a real homestead once we get some animals bigger than cats!)
Throughout the the past nine years I have gone through a variety of seasons in life. Some have given room for a lot of writing time and others have made writing near impossible. Especially the past three years. We moved from one state to another, began homeschooling, and have undergone drastic changes to our daily lifestyle. From the start, our goal was to balance life well. However, this chapter of life has taught me that balance does not mean doing everything I want to do. Instead, balancing life well means giving up some things permanently, or for a season, in order to balance what is most important to our family.
Letting Go of Some Things
This blog is evidence to the fact that writing has been one of the things that I’ve had to set aside for a season in order to live life to the glory of God. Our family needed to establish a new daily routine so we could function and flourish. This involved a huge time commitment from myself as we wrestled through many challenges and continually tweaked schedules. (Those stories will have to wait for another day.) I couldn’t write in good conscience when I had no idea what was for dinner, or when papers needed grading, or when laundry was piled high. The list could go on indefinitely!
Over the summer, I spent hours planning and praying over our schedule. I said “no” to several good things to make room for God’s plans for our family. One day a notice from my hosting company showed up in my inbox and I had a big decision to make: should I give up writing permanently?
God’s Plan for Me
I prayed that God would make the decision very clear and prepare my heart for His plan. Just when I was ready to close the door permanently…He threw it open! As I was praying for direction, God gave me the opportunity speak at the upcoming Homemaking Ministries Online Conference. Ironically, this year’s theme is Finding Balance in Your Home! After three years of learning so much about balance in life, God was giving me the opportunity to speak about it! While I have not reached perfection in balancing life, God has done a mighty work to mature me in this area. I am confident that:
“…He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. – Philippians 1:6″
I am sure my blog will still be fairly quiet since I’m preparing for the conference and trying to meet some other writing deadlines that God provided. But I am okay with that. For me, writing is not about meeting the latest successful blog standards. It is about living in a way that brings glory to God; and in my life that means there are other things that must come before my fingers exercise by tap dancing across the keys.
As I continue this journey in finding balance, I hope you will join me. Maybe you already know what needs to change. Then go and make those changes! Maybe you know you need to change, but are unsure of what and where. If so, consider a ticket to the Finding Balance in Your Home conference and allowing God to use it as an instrument of refinement in your life.
